What is SI Joint Dysfunction?
The hip is one of the body’s largest weight-bearing joints in the body. This ball-and-socket joint allows motion and supports our weight. The sacroiliac (SI) joint links the pelvis and lower spine and has the primary function of providing stability for the pelvis and bearing the load of the upper body when you stand, walk and shift weight.
SI joint dysfunction generally refers to pain in the hip region caused by abnormal motion in the sacroiliac joint. This is thought to cause chronic low back pain, groin pain, and leg pain, all of which can negatively impact one’s quality of life.
What Causes SI Joint Pain?
Hypermobility of the SI joint describes too much movement, and this excessive motion may inflame and disrupt the joint and surrounding nerves. Hypomobility, often caused by arthritis, occurs when the joint has too little movement, which triggers the bones to rub against one another, creating extreme pain and may inhibit mobility.
Causes of hypermobility and hypomobility of the SI joint include:
- Traumatic event or impact
- Degeneration
- Pregnancy
- Abnormal walking pattern
- Spine surgeries
- Infection
- Previous iliac crest bone graft (ICBG)
- Arthritis
How Do I Know If I Have SI Joint Dysfunction?
SI joint dysfunction is a common source of pain in many patients with low back pain. While low back pain can be an acute, short-term problem for some, others experience chronic, long-term symptoms that can limit mobility and affect their quality of life. Common signs and symptoms include:
- Dull, unilateral low back pain
- Burning, numbness or tingling in the leg
- Pain that becomes worse and sharp while doing activities
- Feeling of leg instability
- Muscle tightness and tenderness in the hips or buttocks
- Low back pain and stiffness
- Disturbed sleeping patterns and sitting patterns due to pain
Oftentimes, SI joint pain is misdiagnosed as a spine condition. This misdiagnosis frequently results in unnecessary surgery, which is why it is crucial to have an accurate diagnosis for SI joint dysfunction.
