Get to Know LinQ: The Revolutionary SI Joint Procedure
PainTEQ’s LinQ procedure is a revolutionary, minimally-invasive surgery intended to treat sacroiliac joint fusion for conditions such as degenerative sacroiliitis and sacroiliac joint disruptions. The procedure allows for fusion and stabilization of the sacroiliac (SI) joint in eligible patients where non-surgical treatment has failed to provide long-term relief. LinQ is a simple procedure that may provide immediate relief of pain symptoms without the need for invasive surgery.
Benefits of LinQ
The number one advantage of the LinQ system is that it recreates a normal joint space by placing an allograft wedge between the sacrum and ilium.
Other benefits of LinQ compared to traditional SI joint surgery include:
- Minimally invasive
- No metal implanted
- Faster recovery time than traditional fusion
- Posterior approach away from nerves and large blood vessels
The LinQ surgery system incorporates only 4 easy steps: guide pin, dilator, decorticate, insertion. No drilling required! Utilizing minimal instruments means there are minimal steps required to complete the surgery. This saves the operating room time and money while improving patient outcomes.
All About the LinQ Implant
The wedge of the LinQ implant assumes the responsibility that the diseased joint capsule no longer performs. When the joint capsule fails, the joint collapses and allows the sacrum and ilium to grind on each other. This will lead to inflammation and pain. The LinQ allograft wedge distracts the two bones of the joint, relieving the source of pain.
The LinQ allograft implant also provides the mechanical stabilization of the degenerated hypermobile SI joint. A hypermobile SI joint shifts all the bodyweight into the supporting ligamentous structures. The ligaments work in conjunction with the joint capsule to stabilize the joint. When the joint capsule fails, all the bodyweight is transferred into the ligaments. This unnaturally stresses and strains the ligaments, which then also become a pain generator. The LinQ implant will shift the bodyweight back onto itself and relieve the abnormal stresses on the supporting ligamentous structures.
LinQ is designed with a large graft window. This window allows the packing of a graft extender. The LinQ system utilizes a demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as the graft extender. DBM is osteoinductive. This gives the LinQ implant an advantage as DBM is well documented to stimulate bone growth. The DBM, in combination with the large graft window, facilitates accelerated bone growth through the implant, which will lock it into place. This enables a large bony bridge across the joint. The larger the bony bridge, the greater the mechanical stabilization of the joint.
The LinQ system uses just one implant to stabilize the SI joint. This can be accomplished by placing the implant in the middle of the joint. This will create equal distraction throughout the whole joint.
The LinQ implant is secured in the joint not only using ligamentotaxis but also by utilizing press-fit principles. This is accomplished by cutting out a channel that is slightly smaller than the implant. Thus, there is compression along the implant on each side of the joint. Not all implant systems are designed to employ press-fit advantages – that’s just one way that LinQ leads in SI joint innovation.
